Introduced in 2000, the distinctive styling and spacious accommodations of the Carver 396 Motor Yacht (called the Carver 39 MY in 2005–6 and 40 MY in 2007) combined to create one of the most popular cruising yachts of her day. Carver sold a ton of these boats—no other motor yacht in her class matched the 390 when it came to space and comfort, and none surpassed her in versatility or value. Below, the vast full-beam salon—made possible by raising the side decks to eye level—is an impressive display of high-gloss woodwork, Ultraleather seating, tiered cabin windows, and nearly seven feet of headroom. Both staterooms have walkaround queen berths, and the forward head is split with the shower stall to port and toilet compartment to starboard. In 2003 a new dinette floorplan with revised forward stateroom and head became standard. Wing doors and a hardtop protect the aft deck from the elements, and a fiberglass stairway descends to the swim platform. Topside, the helm is forward with wraparound lounge seating and wet bar aft. MerCruiser 380hp gas engines cruise the Carver 396 at 14–16 knots (mid 20 top). Cummins 370hp diesels cruise at 18 knots (22–23 knots top).
