Obviously dated by today’s sportboat standards, the Carver 2987 Monterey was an inexpensive entry-level express with a roomy interior and a surprisingly spacious cockpit. The Monterey differs from most express boats her size in that she’s powered by straight inboard engines, a setup that will appeal to many cruisers who prefer the dependability only inboards can provide. This is notable because the vast majority of modern express boats under 30 feet have sterndrive power, which—with the engines aft in the hull—permits a more spacious midcabin interior layout. Built on a solid fiberglass hull, the Monterey’s wide beam together with her modest transom deadrise results in a rather harsh ride in a chop. Her bi-level cockpit is arranged with a wet bar and bench seating forward while the entire aft section of the cockpit is wide open. Below, there are berths for four in the cabin along with a compact galley, removable dinette table, and a small head with shower. Lacking side decks, a walk-through windshield provides access to the bow. Twin 270hp Crusader gas engines cruise at 18 knots and reach a top speed of around 28 knots. Note the brief two-year production run.
