With her handsome Down East styling, versatile layout, and varnished teak interior, the Cape Dory 33 Flybridge is a refreshing alternative to the boring, cookie-cutter cruisers from high-volume manufacturers. Built on a solid fiberglass hull with a wide 12-foot, 2-inch beam, a full-length keel protects the running gear in the event of grounding. The standard single-stateroom, galley-down interior of the Cape Dory 33 offers a roomy salon with L-shaped settee (with adjustable teak table) and lower helm, a large head with separate stall shower, and adult-sized V-berths in the private stateroom. Big cabin windows provide plenty of natural lighting in the salon, and visibility from the lower helm is better by far than from most inside helm positions. The teak and holly cabin sole is traditional touch, and the salon’s overhead grab rail is something all small boats should have. The cockpit features a transom door and teak covering boards, and the compact flybridge has bench seating at the helm. Note the wide side decks and sturdy railings. Fit and finish is impressive throughout. Most Cape Dory 33s were delivered with twin Volvo diesels that cruise efficiently at 16–17 knots (about 20 knots top). A total of 23 were built.
