The Bertram 36 Moppie is a versatile offshore express offered with different cockpit layouts for fishing or cruising. Building a crossover boat like the Moppie involves compromise—the styling has to be at least functional (not flashy) to attract the sportfishing buyer, and the cockpit seating so important in a family express is all wasted space to the fishing crowd. Bertram split the difference with the 36 Moppie by offering different versions of the same boat. In the Sportfish configuration, the cockpit—large enough for mounting a full-size chair—includes a bait prep center, freezer, livewell, transom fish box and a second fish box in cockpit sole. A wide 13-foot beam means the 36 Moppie is a stable boat when fitted with a tower (as many were). With the cruising edition a wet bar is behind the helm seat, opposite a settee with table, and a fiberglass arch was the preferred option. Below decks, the Moppie’s well-appointed interior features a U-shaped dinette to starboard, galley and head to port, and centerline double berth forward with a curtain for privacy. (Early models have a similar layout, but with an offset double berth forward.) Cummins 450hp diesels cruise at 24–26 knots.
