The Bertram 28 Sport Fisherman has the same hull and profile of her sistership, the 28 Flybridge Cruiser, but with an open deckhouse (no salon bulkhead) for improved fishability. A galley and dinette were optional, and a toilet is fitted between the V-berths in the lockable cabin. Simple and easy to clean, this type of basic open-air deck layout is ideal in a sportfishing boat. While she has a flybridge, a lower helm was a popular option. Few changes were made to the 28 SF during her long production run, and while she never attained the level of popularity enjoyed by the more versatile 28 Flybridge Cruiser, used models are still valued today for their spacious deck layout. From the standpoint of construction and design, few production fishing boats in this size range can match the performance of the Bertram 28 in bad weather. Indeed, her seakeeping qualities are phenomenal for such a small boat. Engine access is excellent, and wide side decks make it easy to get to the foredeck. Note the unique handrails separating the bridge deck from the large cockpit. Most Bertram 28s were powered with MerCruiser gas engines for a cruising speed of 18–20 knots.
