Called the 2858 Ciera Command Bridge from 1996–2002, the Bayliner 288 Classic Cruiser has the distinction of being one of the smaller flybridge cruisers built in recent years. The reason there are so few flybridge boats under 30 feet boats has to do with stability—the combined weight of two or three adults on the flybridge of any small boat increases rolling and detracts from stability. With her wide beam and small bridge, however, the 288 Classic offsets this problem to a large extent. For a 28-footer, the accommodations are impressive. The layout includes a private midcabin berth below the raised salon settee, a V-berth forward, an enclosed head and shower aft, and a full galley in the salon. A lower helm is standard, and large cabin windows and excellent headroom add considerably to the sense of space. Like all Bayliners, the detailing and joinery leave a lot to be desired but the low price will certainly appeal to budget-minded boaters. Note that the fuel tank is small and the side decks are narrow. A single 310hp MerCruiser sterndrive engine provides a cruising speed of around 22 knots and a top speed of 32–33 knots.
