The Albemarle 290 XF was introduced in 2008 as a replacement for the company’s very successful 280 Express. With her bold styling (note the flared bow and hullside “gills”) and wide 10'9"" beam, the 290 XF is roomier than her predecessor and prop pockets built into her solid fiberglass hull allow her to operate in fairly shallow water. Her raised bridge deck layout consists of a roomy (about 60-square-foot) cockpit with two insulated fish boxes, one 49-gallon in the cockpit sole, and one 43-gallon box in the transom. A 21-gallon livewell is located at the port forward corner of the cockpit where it’s close to the tackle/bait prep station. Like most modern express boats, the entire bridge deck lifts on hydraulic rams for engine access. The boat’s below deck layout—nicely finished with teak joinery and a teak-and-holly sole—includes a compact galley with microwave, a large standup head with shower, and V-berths forward with backrests that can be deployed to form upper single bunks. The side decks on this boat are wide and the windshield is tall—positive features both. With a pair of Yanmar 315hp diesels, the 290 XF will cruise at in the mid 20s (close to 30 knots top).
