About The Tournament
The Silver Sailfish Derby, founded by the West Palm Beach Fishing Club in January 1935, holds the distinction of being the longest-running sailfish tournament in the world. Though the format has evolved over the years, its rich legacy remains intact. The Derby paused only during World War II, from 1943 to 1945.
At one point, the renowned American author and passionate angler Ernest Hemingway lent his name as a trophy sponsor. The event is also credited with pioneering the red release pennant and was among the earliest tournaments to advocate for catch-and-release fishing practices. The WPBFC takes great pride in preserving this historic tradition.
Anglers and boats participating in the Derby will vie for esteemed accolades, including the Louis S. Boski Outstanding Catch Award and the exquisite Mrs. Henry R. Rea Trophy. Winners will receive trophies, marine artwork, fishing gear, and other prizes. The tournament features a two-day fishing schedule on Thursday and Friday, designed to avoid competing with weekend fishing and to encourage greater participation. To maintain the event’s high standards, the fleet is capped at 50 boats.
