Ocean Alexander 90′ Motoryacht Madness, The Strong Silent Type

Ocean Alexander 90′ Motoryacht Madness, The Strong Silent Type

By Lacey Hagler   April 21, 2018

Owning a yacht is about getting away from the outside world, and most yachts are alluring in this aspect, but the Ocean Alexander 90’ Motoryacht “Madness” is built to be silent, strong, and safe- so you can completely let go in confidence. The extent of naval engineering, craftsmanship, and refinement involved in an Ocean Alexander Motoryacht is difficult to quantify in mere specifications and measurements. Madness is an exceptional example of graceful bearing and obvious splendor that can only be experienced in person, but we will attempt to translate this into words.

“Ocean Alexanders are designed to cruise the Pacific on the west coast, so they’re extremely sturdy,” says HMY Yacht Sales Professional Arthur Grin. Grin earned his degree in maritime mechanical engineering in the Netherlands where he was born and raised. “[West coast cruisers] go from rock to rock, while [east coast cruisers] go from dock to dock, so everything is heavier duty. For example, the anchor bulkhead is a collision bulkhead. Qualities like these keep the interior a lot drier, you never have water weeping through, and you know you and your guests are safe.”

Ride

With an LOA actually over 90 feet and a generous beam of 22 feet, Madness’ muscular stature resists roll with ease and can shoulder her way through a seaway. Her listed displacement of 208,000 pounds is a testament to Ocean Alexander’s strenuous efforts to eliminate excess weight to keep her “Bahamas Friendly” with a draft of 5’ 6” to 6’ 0" without compromising strength and stability. She offers the same Ed Monk Jr. 88' hull design like the current 90' Ocean Alexander models, and her stabilizers were upgraded by experienced owners in order to improve stability and seaworthiness in offshore conditions.

Attention to sound absorption while underway sets an Ocean Alexander Motoryacht apart, with multiple insulation barriers and watertight bulkheads contributing to low decibel readings in all occupied spaces. With twin 1500-horsepower MTU 10V 2000 M93s, you should feel vibration through your feet- but don’t, making the ride not only quiet, but comfortable as well.

Waiting for a drawbridge in the ICW is a breeze, as the Ocean Alexander 90’ is equipped with bow and stern thrusters run by a hydraulic system off the engines, so overheating is also not a concern as with electric thrusters. For a captain bent on using gears alone, with a combination of large props and a big 3.0:1 reduction ratio, gear engagements bite instantly to really move the boat, while reducing vibration due to slower turning props.

Her generously proportioned side decks provide plenty of leeway and security with steel railings shaped to fit the human hand, but once you step inside you’ll see that this doesn’t come at a cost to interior spaciousness.

Flybridge Deck

Care to grill? Aft of the pilothouse on Ocean Alexander 90' Madness is a grilling station with a stainless steel grill, wet bar, seating, and easily maintained fiberglass deck and tables. This deck features a Portugese walk-around configuration, in which two sliding doors open forward to allow guests access to a safe breezeway forward of the helm station. If you'd prefer the ocean breeze to air conditioning, forward sliding doors and both aft portholes fully open to create an open bridge environment. The same upper deck has ample space for a yacht tender and a jet ski.
