When you think about the South Pacific: turquoise waters, deserted beaches, tiki huts, grass skirts, large volcanic islands, lush greenery and an incomparable marine habitat; these may be just a few of the images that flow through your thoughts. The reality of the South Pacific far surpasses your imagination. With a vast and varied chain of islands and the largest reef systems located anywhere in the world, the South Pacific is the ideal place for exotic relaxation and exploration.
Explore French Polynesia... The Tuamotus are the largest chain of atolls in the world and are sprinkled across more than 380 square miles of the Pacific Ocean. Part of French Polynesia, their correct name is actually Archipel des Tuamotu. "Motu" means "a small island" in Polynesian and the prefix "Tua" means distant", which is what the residents of Tahiti thought about any island other than theirs. Arguably the most photogenic island group in the world, the Tuamotu Archipelago is comprised of tiny islands ringing a lagoon. They are originally volcanic islands, like the Society Islands to the west, but their volcanic cones collapsed long ago and coral reefs began forming around the edge of the ancient craters to become today's beautiful lagoons. Our itinerary takes us far beyond the tourist center of Papeete, but you can easily tack on extra days to explore this city.
New Zealand has become a haven for those seeking peace, rejuvenation and relaxation, as well as thrills and adventure-with a population of barely four million and comparable in size to Japan. This island nation offers spectacular vistas not soon forgotten. South Island, with its cloud piercing, snow -capped mountains plunging directly into the sea, is almost a primeval region, offering pristine coastal and water views. Windswept bays and gulfs sprinkled by volcanic islands-called "motus"-characterize the crazy North Island, which also boasts the cosmopolitan pleasures of the nation's principal city, Auckland. A sailor's mecca Auckland has hosted the America's Cup twice. There are several popular cruising grounds in New Zealand, including the beautiful Bay of Islands a North Island's tip and the Marlborough Sounds on South Island. But, for a combination of scenery and accessibility, you can't beat Auckland's Hauraki Gulf.
