Ever Wonder How Viking Yachts Are Built?

By HMY Contributor   January 4, 2016

Over the last four and half decades, Viking Yachts has become an unstoppable global leader in the design and construction of luxury performance sportfishing yachts and motor yachts. Founded in 1964 by Bob and Bill Healey, Viking's approach to building their vessels was much like Carolina builders, assembling the boats on frames at invervals throughout the manufacturing facility. By 1972 Viking was already working on their very first all-fiberglass model, the Viking 33C, and building their way into history as one of the finest yacht brands in the world.

Recently, HMY Yacht Sales was honored to receive this incredible video from Viking detailing their first-class yacht building operation. Take an in-depth look at the state-of-the-art Viking factory and watch never before seen footage of how legendary Viking yachts are made.

Headquartered in New Jersey, Viking quickily grew into a major U.S.-based yacht manufacturer after less than a decade in operation. In the 80's, Viking aquired Gulftstar Yachts in Florida whose designs were considered by many to be some of the best in the industry, and incorporated new innovations that would change the sportfisihing market forever. Re-investing with their own money in the early 90's, the brand has been a world-renown powerhouse every since.

Setting Viking apart from industry competitors is the fact that they are a vertically integrated company, manufacturing in-house over ninety percent of the quality components that go into a Viking Yacht. The company prides themselves on their manufacturing capabilities and their impressive operation takes place in a facility with over 800,000 square feet of production space.

Some of the innovative technologies that distinguish Viking as a yacht building leader are the advanced resin infusion for the tankage and engine-room vent, industry-leading flying bridge developments, tuna towers, forward and aft bait stations, outriggers and much more. These ground-breaking features help keep the Viking Yachts brand at the forefront of the yachting industry. In 2010, their new pod drive system was unveiled as well as a new series of engines rated at over 2,600 hp at the Miami International Boat Show, to keep the performance on par with their striking look and aggressive rake.

Today, Pat Healey, son and nephew of the Healey brothers, presides over the company as CEO consistently maintaining the quality brand that Viking has come to represent for nearly half a century.
